Liver Center Human Tissue Bank

Liver Center Human Tissue Bank

The Liver Center collects de-identified explant tissue from subjects undergoing liver transplantation at UCSF, and from select donor organs not used for transplantation. Associated clinical information is restricted to age, gender and clinical diagnosis. The bank currently comprises liver tissue from >70 subjects with a wide range of underlying liver disesases as noted below. In the case of patients undergoing transplantation for hepatocellular carcinoma, tumor tissue is not part of this collection.

  • Alcohol-associated liver disease
  • Donor organs declined for transplant
  • Autoimmune hepatitis
  • Hepatitis C
  • Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease
  • Polycystic liver disease
  • Primary biliary cholangitis
  • Primary sclerosing cholangitis

The tissue bank contains snap-frozen liver tissue, aliquots in Trizol, and FFPE blocks for sectioning. Each specimen in the bank has H&E and Sirirus Red stained tissue sections available for viewing. To learn more about the human tissue bank or to request tissue, please use the following link.
