Tissue processing and staining. Drs. J.P. Grenert and Aras Mattis are faculty pathologists with special expertise in liver pathology. They have a wealth of knowledge about histochemical and immunohistochemical stains used for the liver. They can advise investigators regarding the most suitable applications to address individual experimental questions. They can also help investigators navigate the different tissue processing and staining options offered by the core.

Histology interpretation. Drs. Grenert and Mattis are available for professional review of slides from rodent and human liver. Review of human liver histology is for research purposes only, and cannot take the place of a clinical interpretation when one is needed. For investigators with large projects requiring quantitative histologic scoring, a formal collaboration is recommended.

Pathology archives. Drs. Grenert and Mattis have a wealth of knowledge of the pathology archives at UCSF. They can help investigators identify individual tissue specimens or groups of cases relevant to specific disease states.  They work closely with faculty in the Pathology Department who monitor and approve the use of human tissue blocks for research purposes. They can also connect investigators with Liver Center members who have rodent tissue collections spanning a variety of liver diseases (toxic, metabolic, neoplastic).
