New insights into injury of the extrahepatic bile duct
The extrahepatic bile ducts are developmentally distinct from the intrahepatic bile ducts, but the mechanisms of injury, repair, and fibrosis in these ducts are not well understood. We have identified several cellular and structural factors that enhance the susceptibility of the neonatal extrahepatic ducts and in some cases adult ducts to injury and fibrosis. These include the cholangiocyte glycocalyx, fibrogenic cells of the submucosa, and the organization of the ductal extracellular matrix.
