Applicants must be affiliated with UCSF or its partner institutions within the Center (BSRI, CPMC, Stanford).
Eligibility Criteria
- New investigator in liver research without current or past NIH support
- Trainee investigator in liver research in final transition to an independent career
- Established investigator outside hepatology with a new liver-related project
- Applicants must be faculty members or postdoctoral fellows in their last year of training (see instructions).
- Special rules apply to prior awardees (see instructions).
Grant Application Process
To apply for the 2010 grant:
- Letter of Intent - Due by 5PM PST on Tuesday, December 1, 2009
Applicants must submit a letter of intent, no more than one page in length, briefly describing the background and objectives of the proposed research project. Accompanying the letter of intent must be Attachment A, indicating the category of eligibility and a brief justification for inclusion in the selected category. If selected, applicants will be notified to submit a full application by Monday, January 4, 2010.

- Full Application - Full applications are solicited by invitation only based on review of the letters of intent. Full applications must be prepared using PHS 398 forms as follow:
- Page 1 - PHS 398 Face Page, completed
- Page 2 - PHS 398 Detailed Budget for Initial Period
- Page 3 - PHS 398 Continuation Page for budget justification AND a statement justifying the category of eligibility for Pilot/Feasibility support
- Page 4-ff - PHS 398 Biosketch Format Page for PI and any other key personnel
- Page ff - Research Plan, Specific Aims, Preliminary Data, Experimental Design and Methods (five page maximum including figures and tables)
- Page ff - References (two page maximum)
- Page ff - Vertebrate Animals/Human Subjects (which ever is/are applicable)
- Page ff - Letter of Support from research mentor (Trainee applicants only)
